Doug Longstaffe (Director and Senior Certified CPE Supervisor at VCH)
Doug comes from the land of the Great Spirit – Manitoba. He is the profession leader, department head and senior CPE supervisor for Spiritual Care and Multifaith Services.
His background includes education and experience in Ministry, Education and Therapy. Doug likes to reflect upon the context in which things take place and consequently has spent considerable time in the course of his career advocating in various corridors of power on behalf of the profession of Spiritual Care. Doug also likes to write and has contributed approximately a dozen articles on spiritual care topics. He believes strongly in a rigorous but non-abusive approach to CPE education in which students come to understand how their self-awareness relates to the competencies required for bedside ministry.
Doug is proud of the team we have in our department and is excited to see it growing and transforming. One of Doug’s favorite expressions is “nothing changes until it becomes what it is”. He likes to travel and considers Greece the 2nd holy land. One of his great puzzlements is how the Greeks could have got it so right 3000 years ago while we today languish in relative social ignorance. On a lighter note , you can ask him about Greek Belly Dancing.
You can contact Doug at [email protected]
Arun Chatterjee (Spiritual Health Education Leader and Certified CPE Supervisor at VCH)
Arun changed his career from engineering to spiritual care due to an awakening experience which led him to this work. He is an alumni of Vancouver School of Theology.
His religious and cultural background is Hinduism, however he practices Vipassana meditation and draws wisdom from all faith traditions.
Outside work, Arun is very invested in his family and community. He is passionate about his ministry in the area of inequality, marginalization and homelessness, and interfaith awareness.
Currently, he enjoys watching all kinds of movies, singing and spending time with friends.
Arun can be reached at: [email protected]
Beth Burton (Certified Spiritual Care Practitioner and Provisional Supervisor-Educator)
Beth grew up amidst the lakes and trees in a small village in Ontario. Her love of this forest led her to an undergraduate degree outdoor education, a much-loved initial career. After some time in that field, she obtained a second undergrad degree in theology in Winnipeg, which eventually propelled her to CPE and a master’s degree in Spiritual Disciples and Ministry Practices. Beth worked as a Spiritual Health Practitioner in long term care, as well as adult and pediatric trauma in acute care. Subsequently she worked as a director of spiritual health teams in both Winnipeg and Vancouver.
Beth continues to be rejuvenated spending time outdoors. She is a hiker, camper, skier, professional hammock-lounger and most recently she has been learning to sail as part of a racing team. She is an expert at none of these things (except the hammock!) but is a life-long learner and is cultivating the art of saying “yes” as opportunities for new experiences occur. She is a lover of good quotes and one of her favourites these days is “dwell in possibility” (Emily Dickenson).
Beth is excited to join the VCH team and begin a new professional learning journey as a provisional supervisor.
Beth can be reached at: [email protected].
Philip Murray (Certified Spiritual Care Practitioner and Provisional Supervisor-Educator)
Philip Murray grew up in the Toronto area and completed undergraduate studies in Psychology before moving to the lower mainland for graduate studies at the Vancouver School of Theology, after which he worked in youth ministry and spent some time teaching in Asia. Philip completed his CPE residency at the University Health Network and worked as a Spiritual Care Practitioner at the Toronto General Hospital and the City of Toronto Long Term Care Homes and Services before returning to Vancouver to become the Spiritual Health Leader at the Fraser Health Authority, after which he worked at Providence Health Care where coordinated Spiritual Health services at Brock Fahrni Long Term Care Home and established a spiritual care program at the Crosstown Clinic on the Downtown Eastside..
Philip's current responsibilities at Vancouver Coastal Health are as the Spiritual Health Practitioner and Educator for Vancouver Community where he provides direct support to the Vancouver Community Palliative Care Program in addition to facilitating the Vancouver Community CPE Unit.
Philip is passionate about the importance and value of spiritual health and is a leader at the provincial and national levels of the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care having served on the Board of Directors and BC's Regional Executive Committee. In his spare time Philip enjoys hiking, spending time with friends and family, helping with worship leadership at Brentwood Presbyterian Church and singing with the Good Noise Vancouver Gospel Choir.
